Though the movies are based on true incidents, they do not depict actual incidents that have occurred apart from being loosely based on the true events described by Ed Gein. Gein was an American murderer who was active in the 50s. The franchise has released 9 movies, several comic books and a videogame, with a second game said to be in the making.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie Franchise

The first movie came out in 1974 titled The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was by far the most successful movie of the franchise. With the release of this movie the popularity of slasher movies rose in the 1970s. The original movie is about a cannibalistic family from rural Texas who prey on their customers, well that’s one way of winning the daily bread for your family.

The film introduces us to Leatherface, the notorious killer donning his blood-soaked apron and with a mask made of actual human skin, is a recurring character in all installments of the movie.

The second movie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 that came out in 1986 was set 13 years after the first movie. Despite not being a huge hit in the box office like the first film, the sequel did manage to gain a cult following. The second installment was a comedic horror that relied on the gore effects and dark humor for the laughs. Movies that were released after the second part were underwhelming to say the least.

The 2003 remake of the original movie, produced by Michael Bay and directed by Marcus Nispel was one of the most successful movies in the franchise. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) set in 1973, the year in which the original movie is set in as well, is based on the events from the first movie.

However the 2003 remake follows a different storyline altogether. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) tells the audience as to why Leatherface uses human skin as a mask, the reason being a skin disease that rots his nose. The remake was so successful that it was followed by a prequel, The Texas chainsaw massacre: the new beginning released in 2006.

The Franchise released two other movies before the latest installment of the series came out, in February of 2022. Streaming on Netflix, the new movie is directed by David Blue Garcia and produced by Fede Alvarez. Garcia believes that Texas chainsaw massacre (2022) is a direct sequel to the original 1974 movie. That means you don’t necessarily have to watch the 7 other movies in between for continuity.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) Plot

Leatherface who was in hiding for nearly 50 years since his initial killing, returns to terrorise a group of young friends who disrupt his safe haven. The young pack of friends, Melody, Dante, Lila and Ruth come down to Harlow, Texas for a business venture, unbeknownst to what is about to happen to them when they encounter the human skin wearing Leatherface.

The group intends to gentrify the abandoned town and make a profit out of it. What follows is a bloody affair between the recently awoken Leatherface and the would-be residents of the town.

Fan Reaction

The Netflix movie which was expected to be a disappointment did manage to win over the fans and do justice to the legacy of Leatherface. The fans of the series seemed to have loved the violence depicted in the slasher flick.

English musician John Squires tweeted:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 isn't interested in breaking any new ground but it succeeds where it matters most: it's a mean, brute force slasher that plays out like a shark movie on land. Sally is mishandled but Leatherface is terrifying and the set-pieces deliver. Worked for me! pic.twitter.com/3EukbCaGST

Fans pointed out that the latest installment was better than other recent releases from the franchise

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix was satisfying. Plenty of blood & gore. It's worth a watch if you're a fan of Leatherface. Definitely not the worst film in the franchise. pic.twitter.com/VncULJIzME

Thoroughly enjoyed THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2022). Refreshing to see an IP slasher not trying to be something it isn't.

TCM has no agenda other than to entertain and deliver what we want from a slasher – some brutal action that doesn't take itself too seriously. Great fun! pic.twitter.com/zplIIOSGSq

Review

A decent sequel, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, like any other horror movie these days, is just a bloodbath. Texas chainsaw massacre addresses school shooting with one of the characters being a survivor. The film is aimed at millennials and indicates the possibility of driving the franchise to appease the younger generation. The announcement of an online multiplayer game also suggests the same. Texas chainsaw massacre is an eye candy for fans of slasher flicks. The movie, released on Netflix, is definitely worth a watch.
